Yarn count explained: Ne, Nm and tex.

Yarn count describes the relationship between yarn length and mass, but different systems use different conventions.

Tex expresses grams per 1,000 metres, so a higher tex number indicates a heavier yarn per unit length. English cotton count (Ne) is an indirect system: a higher count indicates a finer yarn. Metric count (Nm) is also an indirect system based on kilometres per kilogram. These systems should not be compared as if their numbers were interchangeable. Confirm count system, tolerance, composition, spinning method, ply, twist and intended process in the enquiry.

Key takeaway: Specify the count system explicitly and ask suppliers to confirm any tolerance or test method relevant to the order.
